Torrance, which was formally incorporated as a city in May, 1921, now has a population of over 147,000, including the second highest percentage of Japanese demographic in California (8.8%), exceeded only by Gardena.
Torrance is a very large area with many different and varied neighborhoods and includes some 30 parks, 5 public high schools (not including the well-regarded private Bishop Montgomery High School), eight middle schools and 17 elementary schools.
Some notable areas include South Torrance, which encompasses the Seaside Ranchos “Christmas Tree Lights” area, where residents go all out with their seasonal holiday decorations (see photo), Old Torrance, the original city center that contains a number of classic Craftsman and beach bungalow-style homes and West Torrance with its proximity to shopping and excellent medical facilities (Little Company of Mary Hospital is within its boundaries).
