Hermosa Valley Info
Hermosa Valley, according to the Board of Realtors, is, as noted above, the area of Hermosa just east of Ardmore Avenue, although locals tend to refer to Hermosa Valley as including the area just west of Valley between Hermosa Valley school and Valley Park (note the prevalence of 'valley' in the names even though both the school and the park are technically within the Sand section, according to the realtors).
The housing stock in Hermosa Valley is roughly an equal mixture of single family homes and townhomes. Because the topography is, for the most part, downsloping from PCH, some homes enjoy very nice ocean views, particularly along Gould Avenue, El Oeste Drive, Longfellow Avenue and 30th Street (the photo to the right is actually a view shot from a new home on Marlita Place which sits above El Oeste).
The public school options are the same throughout Hermosa beach, with the tykes going to Hermosa View for K-2 and older children going to Hermosa Valley for grades 3-8. Since Hermosa Beach does not have its own high school, the options are either Mira Costa in Manhattan Beach or Redondo Union in South Redondo (Hermosa residents can choose either high school option).
Hermosa View is located off of Prospect Avenue in the northeast quadrant of Hermosa and Hermosa Valley is located off of Valley near Pier Avenue. Like most beach cities schools, the scores at both schools rank extremely high.
The 3-year average scores for these schools based on their 2011-2013 Academic Performance Index (API) scores are set forth below. The API is an annual measure of a school's test score performance calculated by the California Department of Education and is a single number on a scale of 200 to 1,000 that indicates how well students in a school performed on the previous spring’s tests.
|School||API*||School Web Site|
|Hermosa View||949||hbcsd.org/hermosa view|
|Redondo Union High School||851||RedondoUnion.org|
|Mira Costa High School||912||MiraCostaHigh.org|
*Note: State-mandated changes to the API have resulted in no new API scores for 2014 and 2015.
